Infest the Rats' Nest is the fifteenth studio album past Australian psychedelic rock band King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard. It was released on 16 August 2019 by the band's tape characterization, Flightless, and ATO Records. The album sees the ring exploring farther into heavy metal and thrash metallic which they had just briefly touched upon on previous albums.[ii] [iii] The album's themes deal with climate change impacts, destruction of the environment and man resettlement to other planets.[4] Information technology is the band's concluding studio album to feature ring fellow member Eric Moore before his departure a yr later.

At the ARIA Music Awards of 2019, the album was nominated for ARIA Award for Best Hard Rock or Heavy Metal Anthology,[5] losing to Northlane for Conflicting.

Groundwork [edit]

Infest the Rats' Nest'southward showtime single, "Planet B", was given a surprise release on 8 April 2019, before the release of the band's fourteenth studio album Line-fishing for Fishies, along with an accompanying music video. The song non being featured on the rail list for Angling for Fishies also as its distinct contrast to the sounds on that album led to speculation that the band might release a 2nd album in 2019.[6]

During a Reddit AMA on 30 Apr, the band confirmed the next album was in the works and would include "Planet B", but they had non decided if it would exist released in 2019. The album was initially believed to exist named Automobile-Cremate due to the band'south use of the name as their username in the AMA, but was later confirmed to be titled Infest the Rats' Nest.[7]

On 29 May, the ring released the anthology's second single "Self-Immolate" with another accompanying music video a calendar week subsequently a teaser on social media.[8] On 18 June, the band posted another teaser on social media which confirmed the album'due south championship. The album was officially announced iii days afterward with a release date of 16 Baronial.[9] [x] On 25 June, the ring released a third single, "Organ Farmer", along with a music video that included fans as extras.[xi]

Infest the Rats' Nest was composed and recorded mostly with only three of the band's usual 7-human being lineup (Stu MacKenzie, Joey Walker, and Michael Cavanagh) and showcases influences derived from heavy metal, mixing the band's signature garage rock guitar tones and psychedelic stone sounds with thrash metallic. The album makes consequent apply of double kick drumming influenced by heavy metallic pioneers Motörhead. Mackenzie also said that the album's strong thrash metal influence was derived from bands such equally Metallica, Slayer, Exodus, Overkill, Sodom, Rammstein and Kreator.[12]

Infest the Rats' Nest was well-received past music critics upon its release. On the review aggregator website Metacritic, the album has a score of 77 out of 100 based on 14 reviews, indicating "more often than not favorable reviews".[fourteen] In the review for AllMusic, writer Tim Sendra ended that "King Gizzard aren't sugarcoating anything, either musically or thematically, and that makes for their most timely and political album nonetheless. It's besides 1 of their well-nigh musically compelling and impressive, too, and that'due south saying a lot."[15]
